Red Deer Pond Hockey - Alex's Legacy
Alex lived with the mental and physical toll of severe hemophilia, but despite that, his love of hockey led him to play with Stettler Minor Hockey and with Red Deer Minor Hockey. At the age of 10 he was required to move up to the Pee Wee division, which was hit hockey at that time, too dangerous for a child with hemophilia.
That year Alex's father, Brian Ennis created the Red Deer Pond Hockey League to allow Alex and other children with barriers to play hockey. Starting with 30 players in 2002, the league has grown significantly and provided Alex several more years of not only playing his favourite game but also coaching and refereeing.
In May of 2019, Alex tragically passed away at the young age of 26. He was a kind, big-hearted and loving man; a wonderful son, brother, uncle, cousin, grandson and friend to many. His courage and determination in facing the many challenges during his short life were an inspiration to all who knew him.
He was the first player of the Red Deer Pond Hockey League, which has since grown to over 750 participants. His legacy as the inspiration for this inclusive league will live on in the hearts of all who knew him and will hopefully inspire others to live their lives courageously, overcoming any barriers they may face.
Red Deer Pond Hockey is a family of parents, kids and volunteers who truly care about this league and its guiding principle that all youth should have the opportunity to play hockey in a fun and supportive environment.
Have a great tournament, have fun!!!!
Sincerely -
The Ennis Family
